Our Protector

When I was about 5 years-old, my mother and my Auntie Val were teasing me and my cousin Ramone (also 5) by flipping their eyelids inside out. Ramone and I began to cry in fear and grandma grabbed us both up, one under each arm and she rocked us and screamed and yelled at them to stop.

To this day, I don't know if I was crying because I was truly that scared, because I saw my cousin crying or just to feel her hug and comfort me. Grandma was my safe place and continued to be for the remainder of her life. Even as a 36 year old woman she would wrap me in her arms, kiss and rock me.

Happy Birthday Grandma. I love and miss you dearly.
